Trying it Out!

Congratulations on completing the Week 1 readings!

We now invite you to try out one or more of the Week 1 skills and strategies. As a reminder, the five Week 1 (intrapersonal) skills are:

Skill #1 – Assume Good Intentions

Skill #2 – Practice Mindfulness

Skill #3 – Expand Your Activities, Expand Your Views

Skill #4 – Seek and Promote Counter-Stereotypical Information

Skill #5 – Focus on Individuality, not Group Identity

Reflecting on Your Practice

As you read about and apply Week 1 skills and strategies in your life, we offer a few questions to reflect on. These prompts, which you can ask yourself before and after trying each of the skills, aim to make your practice more focused and deliberate, and refine the way you use these skills in your life.

Before You Try It

Before you try a skill, think about where and how you could apply it. How might it already show up in your life or work – for instance, in a close relationship, in the classroom, or in your community – and where could it come in handy?

After You Try It

Then, after you’ve had the chance to try it out, consider these reflection questions:

  • How did it feel to practice this skill? What, if any, positive impact did it have on you or others?

  • What was difficult or challenging about it? What barriers did you face in applying it, and what other barriers do you anticipate in bringing it into another part of your life?
  • In what situations – in your personal life, school, work, or community – could you imagine using this practice again in the future?

When you are ready, we invite you to go to the Week 2 strategies.
